Teeth Whitening: Your Guide to a Brighter, More Confident Smile
Your smile is often the first thing people notice. Whether you’re getting ready for a big event, refreshing your appearance, or simply want to feel more confident day to day, professional teeth whitening is one of the simplest ways to make a visible difference.
Whitening is something we think about as part of the bigger picture. If you’re ever considering veneers, Invisalign, or dental implants down the track, a professionally whitened, even shade may provide a better starting point to work from. Brighter natural teeth make it easier to match crowns, aligned teeth, or veneers later on, if that’s ever a path you choose to explore.
What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?
Professional whitening uses a dentist-supervised peroxide gel — either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to break down stain molecules within the tooth enamel. It’s a well-established cosmetic dental procedure, and under professional supervision it’s generally considered safe.
The gels we use are significantly stronger than anything available over the counter, which is why professional supervision matters both for comfort and for managing sensitivity.
In-Chair Whitening vs Take-Home Kits
| In-Chair Whitening | Take-Home Kits |
Time | A single appointment, roughly 45–90 minutes | Worn at home over 1–2 weeks |
Results | Noticeable change in one visit | Gradual, controlled by you |
Best for | Tight timeframes — an event, interview, or similar | Patients who prefer a gentler pace or want to maintain results |
Supervision | Continuous, in-clinic | Custom trays fitted in-clinic, with review appointments |
Both use professional-grade gel and custom protective measures for your gums. Which option suits you best comes down to your timeline, your sensitivity, and your preference is something we’ll talk through at your consultation.
What Happens During Treatment
Consultation first. Before any whitening, we check your oral health including enamel condition, gum health, existing decay, and any restorations (crowns, veneers, fillings) that won’t change colour with whitening. This step also lets us set realistic expectations for your specific teeth.
A professional clean. Removing surface plaque and tartar first means the whitening gel can work evenly.
For in-chair treatment: we protect your gums with a barrier, apply the whitening gel in cycles, and monitor your comfort throughout the appointment.
For take-home kits: we take an impression to create custom-fitted trays, then provide gel and clear instructions for wearing them at home.
Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
Under professional supervision, teeth whitening is generally considered a safe cosmetic procedure. That said, it isn’t right for everyone, and a proper assessment matters:
- Existing tooth decay or active gum disease needs treating first
- We take a cautious approach for pregnant or breastfeeding patients, pausing whitening during this time
- Temporary sensitivity is common and usually settles within a day or two; we can recommend desensitising products if needed
- Whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it won’t change the colour of crowns, fillings, or veneers
Something Worth Knowing: Whitening Has Limits
Not every stain responds the same way.
Extrinsic stains — the surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, or smoking generally respond well to professional whitening.
Intrinsic stains, which sit within the tooth structure (from certain medications, developmental factors, or ageing), can be more resistant, and results vary from person to person.
If whitening doesn’t get you all the way to your goal or if you’re also looking to change the shape, size, or alignment of your teeth rather than just the colour, that’s a conversation worth having with your dentist. We’ll always be upfront about what whitening can and can’t achieve for your particular teeth.
Maintaining Your Results
How long your results last depends heavily on your habits:
- Avoid strongly pigmented foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine, dark sauces) for the first 24–48 hours, when teeth are more porous
- Good daily brushing and flossing help prevent new surface stains from settling
- Smoking noticeably shortens how long results last
- Regular six-monthly cleans and occasional touch-up treatments (using take-home trays, if you have them) help keep your results looking their best
With good care, many patients maintain noticeable results for a good stretch of time, though this varies by individual. Lifestyle factors like diet and smoking make a real difference either way.
Ready to Talk About Your Smile?
If you’re considering whitening on its own, or as part of a bigger plan that might one day include veneers, Invisalign, or implants, a consultation is the best place to start. We’ll assess your teeth, talk through realistic outcomes, and help you decide what’s right for you.
